“To be able to distinguish between the law and the gospel is of utmost importance to the faith, holiness and comfort of every true Christian.” John Colquhoun, A Treatise On The Law and The Gospel.
In our tex, Romans 4:13-25, Paul continues to discuss the doctrine of justification by faith. After showing the antitheses between justification by faith and justification by works, Paul now develops the contrast between the law and the promise. He reminds us of the gospel promise made to Abraham. The law does not nullify that promise.
We will consider these four points:
1. The promise made to Abraham.
2. Why it depends on faith and not works of the law.
3. The example of Abraham’s faith.
4. The fulfillment in Christ for all who believe.
