Pharoah and the Spiritual Warfare of the Church

Our text is Exodus 1:15-22. We will see how Pharoah’s war on the male children of Israel fits into the warfare of the ages as first described in Genesis 3:15. We will consider how this passage is intended to encourage our faith and remind us of the sovereignty of God and the victory of Christ over all our enemies.

The Privilege of Sons

Our text for the morning sermon is Matthew 17:22-27. In this text, Matthew gives us Jesus’ response to paying of the temple tax. This account is only found in Matthew’s Gospel. Jesus’ response is different than his response to the Pharisees’ question about ceremonial washing in 15:2. Jesus claimed exemption from this tax because of who he was, yet he makes provision for himself and his disciples in a miraculous way.

Spiritual Victory through Christ

When Jesus came down from the mountain, he was immediately confronted with the failure of the disciples to do what he had given them the power to do (i.e., cast out a demon). Here Jesus seems to be most frustrated in his ministry. But Jesus brings healing and explains the need for the disciples to exercise their faith. We will consider the nature of saving faith and how the resurrection of Christ makes all the difference in our spiritual warfare.
